India comfortably thrashed Cambodia in their opening game in the men’s indoor volleyball event at the Asian Games 2023.
It was the Pool C game of the men’s indoor volleyball between India and Colombia. India won that challenge by 3-0 with an outclass performance, where the final scorelines were 25-14, 25-13 and 25-19. It was an hour game where India totally dominated.
Indian middle blocker Ashwal Rai scored the most points for the country with 16 points. Captain Vinit Kumar (OP) and outside hitter Amit both scored 11 points each.
While that Pool C win was crucial for India to advance to the Final Round (Round of 12), their last Pool C match will be one of the top teams in the tournament, South Korea.
Asian Games 2023: Men’s Indoor Volleyball – Competition structure
A total of 19 teams are participating in the preliminary group stage of the competition. While the last Pool F has four teams, the other five Pools (Pool A-E) have three teams each.
While the Final round of this event will start from Round of 12, which will also be the beginning of the knockout stages of the competition, the top two teams from each group will advance to the first knockout stage (Round of 12).
After the Round of 12, the next stages are Quarterfinals (4 teams will participate among the 6 Round of 12 winners, while two others will directly qualify for the Semifinals), Semifinals, and Final.
Team India medal records in the Men’s Indoor Volleyball at the Asian Games history
India have won three medals in the men’s indoor volleyball event at the Asian Games history. While they were silver medalists in the 1962 edition by finishing as the runners-up, they secured two bronze medals in 1958 and 1986, respectively. So, Indian men have been waiting to win a medal for 37 years.
