Top 5 players who scored highest runs in a single test match

Test cricket has seen some remarkable match-winning innings, great individual batting displays. Be it Brain Lara's record-breaking 400 or Virendra Sehwag's triple hundreds. These are some great innings performances, however, one fact that isn't emphasized enough is what are the highest runs scored by an individual in a single test match.

Hence this article will present the list of the top 5 batsmen to score the most runs in a single Test match.

5. Brain Lara (400)

1st Innings= 400*

2nd Innings = Did Not Bat

Arguably the greatest West Indies batsman, Brain Lara broke all the records when he stepped to bat against England in 2004. History was made in the first innings when Lara scored 400 not out. It to date is the highest individual score in a Test match.

Unfortunately, England was given a follow-on by the Indies and the match was drawn without West Indies batting again.

4. Kumar Sangakkara (424)

1st Innings= 319

2nd Innings = 105

It was the second test of the 2-match series against Bangladesh. Sir Lankan Kumar Sangakkara took the matters into his own hands as he smashed his highest score of 319 in the first innings.

He followed his great knock with another great knock when he scored 105 in the second innings. The result of the match was also a draw.

3. Mark Taylor (426)

1st Innings= 334

2nd Innings = 92

Australian legend scripted his greatest knock-in test cricket when he scored 334 while opening the batting in the first innings.  He almost scored another century in the second innings, but he was dismissed for 92. Although, these innings put him second on the list of most runs scored in a single Test match.

2. Shubman Gill (430)

1st Innings= 269

2nd Innings = 161

During Shubman Gill's second Test as a captain, while India recorded their historic first Test win at Edgbaston in Birmingham, the new Indian Test skipper played two dream knocks that helped India to record their largest Test win outside home by 336 runs. During the first innings of that Test match, Gill scored 269 runs. Later, during India's second innings of the same Test match, Gill scored 161 runs and became the first batter to record 200 and 150 runs in the same Test match. With 430 runs, Gill stands in the second position in the list of most runs by a batter in a Test match.

1. Graham Gooch (456)

1st Innings= 333

2nd Innings = 123

Graham Gooch tops the list, with the 456 runs he scored against India in the year 1990. It was the 1st test in Lords when Gooch turned his beast mode on and scored 333, which to date is the highest runs scored in Lords; the home of cricket.

His innings were followed by another century in the second innings. He scored 123 and helped England win the match by 247 runs.
