Afghanistan started their ICC
Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a thumping victory against T20 World Cup
debutant Uganda. During that night's match at Providence (Guyana), Afghanistan
players set many great records in the T20 World Cup.
After Uganda chose to field
first, Afghanistan openers' strong batting performances helped the Asian side
manage the first innings total of 183/5 in 20 overs. In reply, Uganda were
bundled out for only 58 runs, as Afghanistan won by 125 runs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz recorded the highest score for Afghanistan in T20 World Cup history; Ibrahim Zadran is in third place
- With his 76 runs, Rahmanullah Gurbaz recorded the highest individual score by an Afghanistan batter in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. The previous record was 73 by Najibullah Zadran (vs New Zealand in Abu Dhabi in 2021).
- Ibrahim Zadran scored 70 runs against Uganda. Zadran is in third place on the list of the highest individual scores by an Afghanistan batter in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history.
Two batters scored 70+ runs in the same innings
- Both Afghanistan openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (76) and Ibrahim Zadran (70), scored 70 or more runs during the first innings against Uganda. It was the fifth time an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match experienced two 70+ scores in the same innings (all five times by both openers).
150+ runs opening partnership
- Afghan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran set up the 154-run partnership for the first wicket. It was the second-highest opening partnership in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. The record is a 170-run unbroken partnership between English cricketers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales against India at Adelaide during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Semi-final.
- Meanwhile, the 154-run partnership of Gurbaz-Zadran became the fourth-highest partnership for any wickets in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history.

Fazalhaq Farooqi claimed a five-wicket haul in the match, ending with the
bowling figures of 4-0-9-5.
- It was the best bowling performance by a left-arm pacer in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. The previous record was 3.4-0-10-5 by English left-arm pacer Sam Curran (vs Afghanistan at Perth in 2022).
- It was the second five-wicket haul by an Afghanistan bowler in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the first Afghan bowler to record this, as the spinner had bowling figures 4-0-20-5 (vs Scotland at Sharjah in 2021).
- Those were the second-best bowling figures by a pacer in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. The record is 3-0-6-5 by Pakistan right-arm pacer Umar Gul (vs New Zealand at The Oval in 2009).
