By winning gold medals in their respective
events at the Asian Shooting Championships 2024, Varun Tomar and Esha Singh
secured India’s two quotas in shooting for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Indonesian capital Jakarta hosted the Asian
Shooting Championships 2024 between 8 and 17 January 2024. While Varun Tomar
won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event, Esha Singh shined with
the gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event.
In the Asian Shooting Championships 2024, the
top two shooters in the men’s and women’s 10m air pistol events (maximum one
per country) could secure the national quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Moreover,
each country is eligible to secure a maximum of two quotas in any one event.
Varun Tomar secured India’s Paris 2024 Olympics quota
In the men's 10m air pistol event at the Asian
Shooting Championships 2024, Varun Tomar already finished on top in the
qualification round with a score of 586. Despite a nervous start, Tomar won the
Final with 239.6 points to secure the gold medal. Another Indian Arjun Singh
Cheema secured the silver medal with a score of 237.3. Mongolian Davaakhuu
Enkhtaivan also managed the podium finish with the bronze medal.
After Sarabjot Singh, Tomar completed India’s
quota in the men’s 10m air pistol event for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sarabjot
Singh secured the quota by winning a bronze medal at the Asian Shooting
Championships 2023.
Esha Singh secured India’s Paris 2024 Olympics quota
Meanwhile, Esha Singh comfortably beat Pakistani Kishmala Talat (236.3) with a score of 243.1 to win a gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event at the Asian Shooting Championships 2024. While another Indian Rhythm Sangwan won the bronze medal (214.5), Surbhi Rao also participated in the Final but finished in sixth place.
The National Olympic Committees have the exclusive
authority to make the final decision on national representatives for the Paris
2024 Olympics.
