Jasprit Bumrah records best bowling figures in IPL as an Indian pacer

The Indian right-arm fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has finally brought a huge relief for the Indian cricket fans after a dominating fifer in the recent IPL 2022 match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) last Monday (9th May) night. While he had the bowling figures of 4-1-10-5 in that game, those were the best bowling figures in IPL history by an Indian pacer.

It was the 56th match of the IPL 2022, where Mumbai Indians (MI) met KKR at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy (Mumbai). Mumbai restricted their opponents to 165/9 in the first 20 overs of the match, thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s maiden T20 five-wicket haul.

Jasprit Bumrah broke Ishant Sharma’s record

Bumrah finished that innings with the bowling figures of 4-1-10-5. It broke the previous IPL record of best bowling figures by an Indian pacer which Ishant Sharma (Deccan Chargers) was holding with the bowling figures of 3-0-12-5 against Kochi Tuskers Kerala at Kochi on 27th April 2011.

However, Bumrah couldn’t beat the legendary Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble’s record of 3.1-1-5-5 for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Cape Town on 18th April 2009. So, Kumble is still holding the record of best bowling figures in IPL history by an Indian bowler, while Bumrah is now in the second position in the IPL record of best bowling figures by an Indian bowler.

Bumrah was also very close to becoming the first Indian to pick up six wickets in an IPL innings, but he failed to pick up a wicket in the final over of that innings and conceded only one run in that over. If he would take a wicket in that over, the Indian right-arm fast bowler could also create history by becoming the record holder of best bowling figures in IPL history.

Here are some key facts after Bumrah’s first T20 five-wicket haul

·       10th Indian pacer to record a five-wicket haul in IPL history.

·       16th Indian bowler to record a five-wicket haul in IPL history.

·       17th overall pacer to record a five-wicket haul in IPL history.

·       26th overall bowler to record a five-wicket haul in IPL history.

Also, while Jasprit Bumrah became the fifth Mumbai Indians bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in their T20 cricket history, his latest 4-1-10-5 bowling figures were the second-best bowling figures for Mumbai Indians in T20 cricket. Alzarri Joseph is on top of the best T20 bowling figures for Mumbai Indians with 3.4-1-12-6, which are also the best bowling figures in IPL history.

KKR won by 52 runs

However, Mumbai Indians suffered a big defeat against KKR this Monday night as the five-time IPL champions were bundled out for just 113 runs (17.3 overs). KKR won that match by 52 runs to continue their fight in the IPL 2022 points table.
