Bowlers who delivered Maiden Over During 20th Over Of An IPL Innings

While the last phase of an innings in a limited-overs cricket match is always challenging for the bowlers, delivering a maiden over in the final over of an innings is always an extraordinary achievement. Here we are talking about those moments when a bowler delivered a maiden over during the 20th over of an IPL innings.

Brief stories about 20th over maiden in IPL

Irfan Pathan (Kings XI Punjab) vs Mumbai Indians at Mohali on 25th April 2008

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan created this history during the inaugural season of the IPL as the left-pacer delivered a maiden over during the 20th over of the second innings of the IPL match, which was the 10th game of the IPL 2008.

After Kings XI Punjab set the 183 runs target for the Mumbai Indians, the visitors managed to score 116/9 in 19 overs. While Ashish Nehra faced Pathan in the final over of that game, where the away team was 67 runs behind from the target, the left-arm pacer successfully finished that over without troubling the Mumbai Indians’ scoreboard.

Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians) vs Deccan Chargers at Durban on 25th April 2009

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Lasith Malinga was one of the greatest bowlers in the death overs. So, it is definitely not a surprising name in this very special list. He was the only second bowler and first overseas bowler in the IPL history to record a maiden over in the 20th over of an innings. Moreover, he recorded that feat exactly one year after Irfan Pathan created that IPL history.

However, it was a slightly different scenario. While Malinga managed to bag two wickets in that over, Deccan Chargers managed to snatch a total of five runs in that over. But those runs came in the fashion of one bye and four leg-byes as Malinga finished that over with a maiden and two wickets.

Jaydev Unadkat (Rising Pune Supergiant) vs Sunrisers Hyderabad at Hyderabad (Deccan) on 6th May 2017

Jaydev Unadkat was another Indian left-arm pacer who recorded a maiden over in the 20th over of an IPL innings. He achieved that feat in a dream fashion during the 44th game of the IPL 2017.

After Rising Pune Supergiant managed to score 148/8 in 20 overs, Sunrisers Hyderabad already scored 136/6 in 19 overs. Unadkat got the duty to deliver the final over, where the opposition needed 13 more runs to win. The left-arm pacer not only delivered an excellent match-winning maiden over, but he also recorded a hat-trick by picking up the wickets of Bipul Sharma, Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar respectively.

Rising Pune Supergiant finally won that game by 12 runs.

Umran Malik (SunRisers Hyderabad) vs Punjab Kings at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy (Mumbai) on 17th April 2022

Indian right-arm fast bowler Umran Malik delivered an inspiring maiden over during the first 20th over of the game, which also played a crucial role in their win.

Punjab Kings were batting on 151/6 in the 19th over when Umran Malik started a fresh spell with the bowling figures of 3-0-28-1. In that maiden final over, his team managed to collect a total of four wickets, including three wickets in the last three balls (including a run out). After managing to out Odean Smith for 13 runs through the caught and bowled dismissal on the second delivery of that over, Malik bowled Rahul Chahar and Vaibhav Arora on back-to-back fourth and fifth deliveries respectively in that over.
