The new season of Indian Premier League is starting from 19, September which will be played in UAE. It will be played amidst the threat of COVID-19 pandemic. The young and dynamic side of Delhi were captained by Shreyas Iyer in previous two editions and they did well in the last season by reaching playoffs.
Squad:
New Additions:
Jason Roy (1.50 crore), Chris Woakes (1.5 crores), Shimron Hetmyer (7.75 crores), Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis, Lalit Yadav, Mohit Sharma, Tushar Deshpande
Players bought in: EIGHT
Full squad:
Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Jason Roy, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan, Sandeep Lamichhane, Kagiso Rabada, Keemo Paul, Mohit Sharma, Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, R Ashwin, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Woakes, Rishabh Pant, Alex Carey, Shimron Hetmyer, Tushar Deshpande.
Strengths:
The batting line-up of Delhi capitals is one of the strongest batting line-up within the present IPL teams. It has got a good blende of youth and experience. They have got four opening batters in the form of Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan and Jason roy.
Tactically Dhawan-Roy opening combination will prove advantageous for DC. These two have got decent international experience. Inclusion of Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer in the setup will strengthen the batting of DC.
DC have got good spin bowling options in the form of R.Ashwin, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane. Wickets in UAE will also help spinners a lot. Kagiso Rabada can utilise the new ball really well.
Weaknesses:
Delhi capitals lacks quality in their fast bowling department. Apart from Kagiso Rabada and Ishant Sharma Delhi’s fast bowling doesn’t look promising. If any one of them gets injured there is not enough backup for them.
Tushar Deshpande a young fast bowler from Mumbai has impressed everyone with his performance in domestic cricket. But, he too has a very little experience.
Opportunities:
On paper Delhi’s squad looks solid. They have done well by reaching the playoffs last season. Delhi Capitals is one of the three teams who have never won a single IPL trophy, the other two being Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab.
This time they have great opportunity to clinch their first IPL title. Rishabh pant looked out of form on India’s tour of New Zealand. He has a point to prove in this IPL season.
Avesh Khan and Tushar Deshpande are players to watch out for in this IPL season. A better IPL season for Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw will put them in a contention for India’s limited overs setup.
Threats:
Lack of consistency in the batting and bowling department has hurt Delhi over the years. Their inability to perform well in crunch situation is the reason why they did not qualified for the finals last year.
They need to perform well in pressure situation and against the big opposition if they have to do well in this year’s IPL. If they play to their full potential there is no reason why they cannot be the sixth new winner of IPL.
