Indian para athlete Nishad Kumar made history with his second gold medal at the Asian Para Games 2026, successfully defending his men’s high jump T47 title.
Last Monday (19 October), Nishad won his first gold medal at the Asian Para Games 2026 by winning the men’s long jump T47 title with a 7.11 m jump. On Tuesday (20 October), in the men’s high jump T47 final, the Indian athlete cleared 2.04m to win his second gold at the ongoing Asian Para Games, successfully defending the title he won in the 2022 edition. The 2.04m was the new Asian Para Games record (T47), breaking the previous record of 2.01 by Angkarn Chanaboon from Thailand (2018). Significantly, he had no foul jump in the high jump final.
In the meantime, Muhammadabdulloh Tursunjono from Uzbekistan (1.94m) and Angkarn Chanaboon from Thailand (1.75m) claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Nishad Kumar became the third Indian to win multiple gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Para Games. In the 2022 edition, Ankur Dhama won gold medals in the men’s 1500m T11 and men’s 1500m T11 events, and Sheetal Devi won gold medals in the women’s individual compound archery open and the mixed team compound archery open events. He is the two-time Paralympic silver medalist in the men’s high jump T47 event (2020 and 2024).
