The battles between Odisha FC and Mohun Bagan has not always been noteworthy as the Green and Maroons have dominated this fixture since entering into the ISL in 2020. However, this season has seen an intense rivalry sparked between them. The Juggernauts have gone through a revolutionary transformation since winning the Super Cup last year and have gone neck-in-neck with the Kolkata giants. In this article, we will delve into the past meetings between the sides that have stayed in the memory of both sets of fans, for right or wrong reasons.
Mohun Bagan 1-0 Odisha FC - ISL (3 December 2020)
The first ever-meeting in ISL, back in 2020, was a tight encounter between the sides played in a bio-bubble in Goa during the pandemic. Odisha FC showed a valiant defensive display against the lethal front-three of the Mariners namely David Williams, Manvir Singh and Roy Krishna. At last, it was the Fijian star’s thumping header from a last-minute corner that secured all three points for Mohun Bagan in the evening but inflicted a heart-breaking loss to Odisha FC.
Odisha FC 0-4 Mohun Bagan - AFC Cup (19 September 2023)
Mohun Bagan also came up top in the first continental meet in September last year and did so in style. Crowned Durand Cup champions early that month, the Green and Maroons rampaged over Odisha FC in the second half scoring four goals in their first game of the AFC Cup this season. The victory was helped by Mourtada Fall’s dismissal just before half-time leaving the home side down to 10 for the rest of the game. Dimitri Petratos became the talisman for the visitors again, scoring a brace backed by Sahal Samad who scored the opener and Liston Colaco added the other.
Mohun Bagan 2-5 Odisha FC - AFC Cup (27 November 2023)
However, it was Odisha FC who eventually sealed the passage to the knockouts in their debut AFC Cup campaign by winning the South Zone group. Prior to sealing qualification against Bangladeshi outfit Bashundhara Kings in the final group match, Odisha FC beat Mohun Bagan 5-2 in a thriller at Salt Lake to take a step closer to securing the spot. It was a sweet revenge for Odisha FC, who had previously failed to win against Mohun Bagan. Unfortunately, the Mariners had to bow out of the competition after this defeat in front of their home supporters.
Mohun Bagan 2-2 Odisha FC - ISL (6 December 2023)
The two once again played out a thriller at the same venue only days after but this time the stage was Indian Super League. Odisha FC went up 2-0 in the first-half with a brace from Ahmed Jahouh, first from the penalty spot and then a clinical finish from Diego Mauricio’s pass. While the visitors were staring at a first ISL win in this meeting, Mohun Bagan had other ideas as they made a brilliant comeback in the second-half. Armando Sadiku became the savior for the Mariners as his elegant finish to reduce the deficit in the 66th minute and then his shirtless celebration scoring the last-minute leveler sent Salt Lake into raptures.
