Mumbai City FC's run to become Shield winners last season was simply sensational. The Islanders toppled almost every record in the league to claim the top spot losing only the last two games before the playoffs. The team is also participating in the AFC Champions League, grouped with Neymar’s Al-Hilal, as the last Indian club to get a direct entry in the group stages. So, the upcoming season will be even more challenging.
Their season opener is an away trip to Guwahati to face NorthEast United. The next game against Odisha FC will see a reunion with ex-players Ahmed Jahouh and Mourtada Fall, who departed this summer. Mumbai City’s first home game does not come until next month against Kerala Blasters. Des Buckingham’s team are also seeking revenge against finalists Bengaluru FC as they take them on December 8, 2023. The Blues ended their unbeaten streak and also knocked them out of the semi-finals in the playoffs.
The last month of the year will be pivotal as they face Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Kerala Blasters FC in the reverse fixture and Chennaiyin FC in the final three games before the Asian Cup in 2024. The Islanders lost to the Kolkata giants for the first time in the Durand Cup but will hope to maintain their unbeaten streak in ISL.
