Punjab FC made history last season by becoming the first side to be promoted to ISL with memories to cherish in the top flight. The Shers finished a notable eighth place in their debut campaign, narrowly missing out on the playoffs and finishing ahead of famed Indian football names like East Bengal and Bengaluru FC. Even though the team did relatively well under Staikos Vergetis, guiding them to the second I-League title last year, the Greek was replaced by another Greek in Panagiotis Dilmperis to take them forward in their second ISL season. Punjab FC also lost their superstar Madih Talal to East Bengal this summer but the side seemed to have recuperated his absence with a handful of talented foreign signings.
Dilmperis’s side will have a difficult start to the 2024-25 ISL season. In their league opener on 15 September 2024, they will travel to Kerala Blasters, before entertaining Sergio Lobera’s Odisha FC at home. Punjab FC will continue to host games at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi after agreeing to a fresh two-season deal. The team will face severe challenges in the last two months of the current year starting with an away match against ISL Cup holders Mumbai City. The three Kolkata giants will be their opponents in December aside from a clash against Jamshedpur FC. The final game of 2024 for Punjab FC falls on boxing day with Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant visiting them.
