The oldest football tournament in Asia, the Durand Cup returns with the 133rd edition set to be played across four cities. Once again, the competition will be contested by all ISL teams with 13 teams competing this time after the third Kolkata giant Mohammedan Sporting Club got promoted to the top-flight by winning the I-League. Inter Kashi and Shillong Lajong are the two representations from the second division while six Indian Armed Forces teams will also compete. Two state league sides and the foreign armed forces team, Tribhuvan Army of Nepal, for successive editions, are invited to complete the 24 teams in the competition.
All clubs are divided into four groups with the top-placed teams directly qualifying for the quarter final stage. The two best runners-up from the group stage will join them in the next round. The final of the competition continues to be staged at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata with the showpiece game of this edition falling on 31 August 2024. Mohun Bagan Super Giant are the defending champions and are record winners of the Durand Cup after beating arch-rivals East Bengal in the 2023 final.
The tournament will witness the Kolkata derby in the group stage for the third successive year with East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant drawn into the same group, Group A, alongside Air Force and Downtown Heroes of Jammu and Kashmir. Kolkata will host this group alongside Group B containing Bengaluru FC, Navy, Inter Kashi and Mohammedan SC and Group C with CISF, Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City and Punjab FC being members. Salt Lake Stadium and Kishore Bharati Krirangan will be the venues.
Jamshedpur’s JRF Tata Sports Complex, known as the Furnace, will host Group D having city club Jamshedpur FC, Chennaiyin FC, Army Red and Bangladesh Army. Bodoland FC, BSF, NorthEast United and Odisha FC are part of Grpup E stationed in Kokrajhar while Shillong hosts FC Goa, Hyderabad FC, Lajong and Tribhuvan Army of Group F.
