Race as it happened: Miami GP 2024 Highlights
The Miami Grand Prix was a race of 57 laps and Max Verstappen had won the Sprint Race the night before. Daniel Ricciardo was starting in 20th place as a result of a three place grid penalty. The race started and Max Verstappen got into the lead followed by the two Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Oscar Piastri took advantage of the chaos between Sergio Perez and the Ferraris. He jumped from P6 to P3 and was in the podium places. Alpine was having an interesting race as both their drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly were wheel to wheel for some time. Oscar Piastri used DRS to overtake Charles Leclerc and go to P2 and was only 2 seconds behind Max Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton was determined to get to P7 and he overtook Nico Hulkenberg of Haas at Turn 11 and not too long later George Russell also got past Nico Hulkenberg. Both the Mercedes drivers got past the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg.
Sergio Perez pitted on Lap 18 of the race and he returned to the race at P10 behind Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Yuki Tsonuda and Esteban Ocon. Max Verstappen was looking set to win yet another race but he collided on Turn 14/15 and as a result a virtual safety car was called in. In Lap 23 after the safety car had ended there was a four way battle between Esteban Ocon, Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly. Lando Norris pitted when the full safety car was on and he came out in front of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc was in P3. Lap 32 and the race was back on track. Lando Norris had to play defensive from a charging Max Verstappen. By Lap 37, Lando Norris was 2.5 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen. Oscar Piastri as a result of defending himself lost places to Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton. He was then forced to pit for a new set of tyres.
Lance Stroll got a 10 second penalty for going off track to get past Alexander Albon. It was time for history as Lando Norris finished the race comfortably as he won his First Ever Formula 1 Grand Prix. It was a surreal moment as he beat Max Verstappen by 7.5 seconds. Max Verstappen was P2 and Charles Leclerc took P3 and the final podium spot of this race. Sergio was in P4 and Carlos Sainz from Ferrari finished in P5 thus meaning 2 drivers each from Red Bull and Ferrari finished in the Top 5. Lewis Hamilton was in P6 and George Russell in P8 meaning Mercedes scored points from both drivers. Yuki Tsonuda from RB was in P7. Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon finished P9 and P10. The only driver who was not able to finish the race was Logan Sargeant and his teammate from Williams Alexander Albon was in P19.
