Like the captain in every other sport, the team principal is also known as the captain of the motorsport team and referred to as the lynchpin as they hold the entire operation and management together. They manage the whole team and make crucial decisions about their performance and production while managing the drivers. 10. John Cooper- 4 F1 World Championships Titles


John Cooper is the son of the legendary engineer Charles Cooper. John was the co-founder of the Cooper F1 Racing team. Unlike his father, John was curious about F1 engines and car design. He became one of the best team principals of his decades who used a rear engine inside the chassis. Under his reign he made his team Cooper F1 win 4 F1 world championship titles. The 2 titles were for the FIA constructor championship and the other two were the driver's championship wins with Jack Brabham and Sir Stirling Moss.

Cooper was one of the oldest British F1 teams that left the sports in the early 2000s. After retiring from the team principal John Cooper decided to manage the sales figures of the British compact hatchback Mini Cooper.  He died at the age of 77 in 2000. Hence Cooper will always be remembered for his contribution in the realm of Formula 1.


9. Ken Tyrrell- 5 F1 World Championship Titles


Ken Tyrrell was a British Formula 1 racer and a founder of the Tyrrell Formula 1 Racing team. He was a Formula 2 racer but never went on to race in F1. However, he entered into F1 as a team principal for Mantra International. Mantra International Racing was a joint-venture racing team partnered with Tyrrell and the French auto manufacturer Mantra. His team  Mantra did not perform well but won a few races in the early '60s.

He had his first success as a team principal with his beloved friend Jackie Stewart. With him, he won 3 world driver’s championship titles and also made Jackie a sensational rising star. Both Tyrrell and Jackie made the Tyrrell F1 Racing team successful comrades winning their first team constructor titles in 1969 and then in 1971. Later on, Tyrrell decided to sell its team in 1997 before Jackie Stewart made an early retirement from racing.


8. Flavio Briatore- 7 F1 World Championship Titles


He was an Italian Businessman and started his career as a restaurant manager. His academic and professional character was not so decent as a manager so he left to pursue something new. With his huge investment, he bought up the stakes of a racing team with Virgin Airlines in the USA. Later on, he joined the paddock as team principal for Benetton F1 Racing in 1988. Yes, you heard it right the team that made legendary Michael Schumacher win his first championship titles in 1994 and second in 1995 consecutively.

After Schumacher left, Briatore decided to rebuild the team with an all-new sponsorship and investment. Renault invested a huge in the team and thus the team was rebranded as Renault Racing and providing its engine to its  F1 car. The team entered into the Grand Prix in 2000 as a new upgraded version and later signed a new driver Fernando Alonso who made him win two consecutive constructor titles and 2 driver’s titles for the team. Alonso is the last F1 driver who won the driver and well as constructor titles with Renault to date.


7. Colin Chapman- 13 F1 World Championship Titles


Colin Chapman is one of the most versatile team bosses the sport has ever seen. He was an engineer, designer, inventor, and the founder of the Lotus Car Company. The Lotus Cars was founded by him in 1952 and soon he debuted his F1 team in 1958. He was the one who introduced the concept of aerodynamics in Formula 1. This made his car one of the top contenders to win Grand Prix races for decades. His aerodynamics engineering and reducing ground effects made his car win 7 world constructor titles.

Chapman was the man who made various drivers win their first-ever F1 Championship titles.  Iconic drivers like Jim Clark, Graham Hill, and Enerson Fittipaldi won their first F1 driver’s titles with Lotus. The last win for the Lotus came in 1982 and then the team was sold to Renault. Then Renault before entering into F1 stopped the operations and the team was out of the paddock in 1994.


6. Christian Horner- 13 FI World Championship Titles


Christian Horner is one of the longest-serving team principals in the current turbo hybrid era. After Enzo, Chapman, Todt, and Ron Dennis, Horner is one of the few team principals who made his F1 team successful during its early stages. He joined Red Bull in 2005 and still serving as its captain to date. Under his guidance, Sebastian Vettel won his first-ever F1 maiden championship title alongside as first-ever constructor title for the team. He then won four consecutive titles back-to-back from 2010 to 2013.

Later On, when Vettel decided to switch to Ferrari, Christian bought one of the young talented drivers Max Verstappen from Torro Rosso. Rest is history, with Verstappen he and his team won 3 driver’s titles in recent years and two constructor titles in 2022 and 2023.

This man showcases the true potential of being a team principal. When Ferrari did not win a single race and did not win any championship title after 1984, Todt was appointed as a team principal in 1994, and under his vision, he brought Binotto and Ross Brawn together to create a golden effect of Prancing Horse. He made Schumacher win 5 consecutive titles and made a dominant era in Ferrari.

Todt was the man who crafted a perfect contender and showed the world what a real Formula 1 team looks like. He brought sponsorships, engineers, and management together to maximize the potential. Toto Wolff has made various records with Mercedes. He made the Sliver Arrows as constructor titles for eight consecutive years which is one of the most titles won by any F1 teams to date.

After Ferrari, McLaren the Williams is the oldest team at the current paddock. But the team-winning days came to an end after Sir Frank Williams lost the team with an absence of budget and operations. Financially the team broke out and sold to an investment firm in 2020. However, the same year Sir Frank Williams died at age 79. His legacy still drives on track.
