Karting, kart racing, or go-kart, whatever you call it, is the same in every aspect of racing. Karting is a league or a class of motorsport racing where small-powered vehicles known as go-karts are used. Let me tell you something for those who are newbies to the motorsport realm: Karting is a pre-elementary school of racing where children at an early age learn to drive go-karts. It is the first ladder to climb to Formula 1 racing or any major motorsport series.

History of Karting

According to various sources, karting was first started as fun to drive for the children's activities. However, some racing enthusiasts in America went on to make karting more than a children's activity. Together, they created a way to drive these underpowered go-karts on smaller tracks different from pre-existing oval tracks, later used for stock car racing. This shows that the beginning of karting emerged from the mainland of the United States of America in the early 90s.

What Is Go-Kart?

Go-karts are small engine-powered open-wheel mini-race cars that are used for racing on specialized racing tracks. Their design and dimensions were somehow similar to a lower lawn cutter from the early 1950s. The vehicle has a single driver’s seat and a small steering wheel with a body very low to a ground clearance. Go-karts, that you see today, have their own enriched story. The history of go-karting began in the early 19th century.  Many believed that farmers from medieval Europe and Latin America had crafted the design ideology of go-karts.

People often wonder how these small open-wheel race cars, known as mini-shifters, became popular in such a short amount of time. To find the answer, we need to go back to the 1950s. It is believed that the first go-kart was invented by Art Ingles in 1956. He was a downtown mechanic who worked with the Kurtis Kraft Company in Southern California.

He got this idea while developing a race car for the organization. The first go-kart he built had a wooden frame and was powered by a West Band two-stroke engine. Initially, the kart design and dimensions were simple, with no suspension rods. The top speed was estimated to be about 60 mph, enough to attract a large audience to the sport.

I hope you understand the basics of karting, from start to finish.  But still, one question arises, how can one get behind the wheels of go-karting or get into the world of karting? Do not worry; we are here to help you out. As you know, karting is a pathway to get into the world of Formula 1 or any motorsport racing.  Some essential points should be considered before entering the racing realm.

  • Research first and analyze: If you are an aspiring racer who wants to make a career as an F1 driver, then you must vow to do intensive research and analysis before moving forward with kart racing. Look out for some state motorsport authorities who organize races for junior drivers.

  • Educate yourself about racing and learn the basics: Read a lot about racing. Watch videos, and take time to educate yourself. Go with your parents to watch a few junior races on weekends.  Learn the basics and get ready to invest in your racing dream, as it's a costly niche.

  • Rent A Kart: Many districts and national motorsport authorities give access to rent-karts to drive and learn the basics. After reading about it, this will be the best way to drive with the knowledge and the fundamentals of real racing skills before moving to the outside world.

  • Ready to Invest in a Beginner’s Racing Course: As I have told you before, racing is a costly niche, and you need to invest more in joining courses that can teach you about driving and braking with modern safety rules and regulations involved in kart racing. Taking a beginner’s drive course helps you to build your racer profile.
