The last race of the 2024 season took place in Abu Dhabi. The Drivers Championship was decided in Las Vegas when Max Verstappen won his 4th World Championship. The constructors championship was undecided and it was between McClaren and Ferrari. The 4 drivers of these two teams would be looking to get the maximum points for their team.

Key Facts From The Race:

  • McClaren have won their first F1 Constructors championship since 1998

  • Lando Norris won his first Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix.

  • This was the second time in his Formula 1 career that he led the entire race from start to finish.

  • Carlos Sainz achieved his 25th podium finish for Ferrari and this would be his last.

  • Lewis Hamilton achieved his best finish at Abu Dhabi since 2021. He finished 4th in the race.

Race as it happened

The race started and Lando Norris made the perfect Start but Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen collided and both cars were out of the track. This resulted in Oscar Piastri going to the back of the grid. Sergio Perez also went off the track. A Virtual Safety Car was called and as soon as it ended in Lap 3, Oscar Piastri hit Franco Colapinto. Max Verstappen had been given a 10 second penalty for the collision with Oscar Piastri. Valtteri Bottas was also given a 10 second penalty for the collision with Sergio Perez. By Lap 8, Charles Leclerc had risen to P7. At Lap 11, Lando Norris was leading by 3.5 seconds from Carlos Sainz of Ferrari. Charles Leclerc got into P5 and Max Verstappen reached P8. By Lap 14, the drivers had started pitting. It was Lap 17 and Lando Norris was still in the lead and his tyres were working great.


At Lap 21, Charles Leclerc pitted and he was the first of the top drivers. By Lap 24 , Lando Norris was leading followed by Carlos Sainz, George Russell, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. For the next few laps, more drivers were going in the pits including Lando Norris who was followed by George Russell, Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton. Lap 30 and Max Verstappen went to the pits and he served his 10 second penalty. As a result he came out at P11. Oscar Piastri also served his 10 second penalty at Lap 33 and he was P15 as a result. At Lap 36, Max Verstappen got into P8. By Lap 41, Lewis Hamilton overtook Nico Hulkenberg and he was chasing George Russell for P4. Max Verstappen reached P7 and Lando Norris was ahead by 4 seconds from Carlos Sainz.


Oscar Piastri was doing the best in a bad situation as he rose to P11 from P15. Lewis Hamilton was only 8 seconds behind George Russell. At Lap 52, Ferrari tried to play a trick as they called Carlos Sainz only for him to go to the garage. Such are the moves one makes when trying to win a championship. Lando Norris won the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix. This resulted in McClaren winning its first Constructors championship after 1998. Carlos Sainz finished his Ferrari career in P2. Charles Leclerc finished in P3 and Lewis Hamilton ended his Legendary association with Mercedes finishing in P4.
