Hosts United States will play in their fifth Copa America since last participating on home soil in 2016. After making it to the last-16 stage of the World Cup in Qatar from a group containing Iran, Wales and England, Gregg Berhalter’s side expects the same thing to play out this summer. USA has some existing names from the World Cup roster with others regaining call-up to the team. The hosts will take on South American giants Uruguay, Bolivia and fellow CONCACAF nation Panama in Group D.
History
United States has appeared for the Copa America four times as an invited team with two fourth-place finishes in 1995 and hosting the Copa América Centenario in 2016. The Stars and Stripes picked up just five wins with three coming in their last participation. Clint Dempsey got three goals in that edition matching the tally of Eric Wynalda set in 1995, the only other time the USA team secured three points in the competition. Cobi Jones, Alexi Lalas and Tab Ramos are the players to have played the most nine games while Lalas is the only American to score in two separate Copa Américas. The memorable match for them in their competition history was defeating Argentina, containing the likes of Javier Zanetti and Gabriel Batistuta, 3-0 in 1995.
Preparation for Copa America 2024
USA won their third straight CONCACAF Nations League after beating Mexico in the final but suffered a huge setback in the first pre-tournament friendly against Colombia losing 5-1. However, Berhalter’s team produced an encouraging performance against Brazil in the next match and could have possibly won it if chances were taken. Christian Pulisic’s rifling free-kick in the 25th minute rescued a 1-1 draw for his side. The captain gave a glimpse of his recent form, five-goal contributions in six games for club and country, which he wants to carry forward to Copa America 2024.

Prediction
If not group winners with Uruguay being the favorites, USA should be good enough to progress to the knockouts as the second-placed side. The quarterfinal will bring a tough challenge as they will face the same Colombian team who heavily beat them in friendlies or Brazil from Group D. Moving into the semis will ask a lot out of the hosts so the possibility looks slim.
