Appearing for a fourth consecutive time in the Euros, Ukraine want to repeat their success of the last tournament having failed to qualify for the World Cup two years ago. Led by manager Serhiy Rebrov, the Blue and Yellows will face a tough challenge in Germany with Romania, Slovakia and big hitters Belgium in Group C. Ukraine will be confident of making it to the knockouts at least with a squad filled with tournament experience and young faces.
History
Ukraine first entered the Euro Championship in 2012 by being the hosts and has not failed to qualify for any finals since. The side narrowly missed knockout qualification in their debut campaign and followed up with a miserable group-stage exit without registering a point on board. However, the Blue and Yellow took their chances in the last tournament by reaching the quarter final stage. Handed a challenging group with Netherlands, Austria and spirited debutant North Macedonia, Ukraine’s sole win over the latter helped them claim the third spot in the group. Under manager and country legend Andriy Shevchenko, they surprised Sweden in a 2-1 with a last-minute extra-time win in the last 16. Despite that, their journey ended with a 4-0 thrashing by England but with pride in heart.
Qualification to Euro 2024
The Three Lions with Euro holders Italy finished in the top two of their qualifying group leaving Ukraine in third. The side lost on the head-to-head record to Azzuri after both finished level on points. However, Ukraine still made it to the qualification playoffs of Euro 2024 for their performance in the Nations League last season. In the playoffs, Serhiy Rebrov’s team overcame Bosnia and Herzegovina’s challenge before beating Iceland in the playoff finals to book their ticket to Germany.
