The fourth edition of the Men’s Nations League will see a change in the competition format for League A and will be linked with European qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In the top division, the group winners and the runners-up will now qualify for the knockout rounds. The competition will feature a quarterfinal stage for the first time, to be played over two legs. The group winners will face off against a runner-up from a different group, with the group winner hosting the second leg. The Nations League will maintain its present format from the semifinals.
Additionally, the best-ranked Nations League group winners finishing outside of the top two in their World Cup qualification group will face the second-placed teams in the qualifiers in the playoffs in a bid to enter the tournament. The league phase of the competition will be held from September to November 2024. The knockout rounds are scheduled for next year with the quarterfinals occurring in March 2025 with the Nations League finals on June 2025. Spain are the defending champions after beating Croatia on penalties in the last edition.
Beaten finalists Croatia are slotted in Group A alongside Portugal, Poland and promoted team Scotland. With all certainty, Group B will go down as the ‘group of death’ as three heavyweights Italy, Belgium and France battle for supremacy with Israel coming from League B. Netherlands and Germany are two top sides forming Group C alongside Hungary and promoted side Bosnia and Herzegovina. Another team entering League A, Serbia will face stiff competition against Switzerland, Denmark and holders Spain in Group D.
