The 2024-25 Champions League season brings a revolutionary change in Europe’s club competition as it adopts a new format. Moving away from the group stages, the premier competition will be played in a league format adhering to the Swiss Model. The number of participating teams has increased to 36 with each side playing eight separate opponents home and away. The top eight teams will qualify directly to the Round of 16 stage while the teams finishing 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out phase play-off to secure their path. The rest will be eliminated from the competition.
The format change ensures heavyweight clashes from the beginning and the opening game week will have a lot of top games in store. The teams will face opponents of equal calibre and have a chance to host a game against higher-ranked opponents. There are no return fixtures like in the group stages. The League Phase will start on 17 September 2024 and run until 30 January 2025. Real Madrid are the defending champions after winning the Champions League a record 15th time last season.
