Manchester United has extended Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's contract till 2024 despite the 3-year trophy drought. The extension is a clear indication that the Norwegian is still being backed by the United board.
Manchester United ended last season in disappointment once again. The Red Devils finished eight points behind champions Manchester City in the Premier League. United also failed to make it past the F.A Cup Quarter-finals and bowed in the Carabao cup Semi-finals. In the 2019/20 season, Manchester United secured a Champions League spot in the last matchday. They failed to capitalise on that as they finished third in their UCL group in 2020/21. The Europa League campaign was going well until the final where Solskjaer's men lost the Penalty shootout against Villareal and had to settle for a silver medal.
The Manchester United board has decided to back Solskjaer by making a few marquee signings. The Red Devils have already broken the bank to sign long term target Jadon Sancho. Raphael Varane is currently closer than ever to a Real Madrid exit. The Frenchman who has been weighing his options in search of a new challenge is keen to join Manchester United according to reports. United have also been linked to Keiren Trippier after the right-back was a rock in Atletico Madrid's title-winning side. Another big move was extending Veteran Edison Cavani's deal till 2022 after a good season leading the United attack.
Paul Pogba is one of the players rumoured to be on his way out after rejecting a new contract according to reports in England. The Frenchman has never really settled at Old Trafford since his mega-money move in 2016. Pogba is reportedly interested in a move to Paris Saint Germain. United have been linked to Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka to replace Pogba if the French midfielder does leave Manchester.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United's manager has had a few periods of incredible promise. But that has never transformed into a piece of silverware. Solskjaer has made it to only one final in 3 years and lost that one on penalties against Villareal. Despite the new contract, Solskjaer's job is far from safe. The Norwegian has to win a trophy at Old Trafford to prolong his stay as a Manchester United manager.
Manchester United fans will be hoping Jadon Sancho will solve Manchester United's long-awaited wait for a world-class right-winger. Raphael Varane and Keiren Trippier will provide much-needed solidarity in defence. Manchester United will have a very good chance to win something this season with the squad they have.
