Bayern is Germany's most successful club, having won a record 31 national titles, including nine in a row since 2013, as well as 20 national cups and numerous European titles. The club's most successful period was in the mid-1970s when it won the European Cup three times in a row (1974–1976) under the captaincy of Franz Beckenbauer. Bayern has appeared in eleven European Cup/UEFA Champions League finals, winning their sixth title in the final of the 2020 season as part of a continental treble, making them only the second European club to do so twice.
Being a Bayern Munich supporter isn't always easy. This appears to be a slap in the face to supporters of other clubs. 5. FC Saarbrücken 6-1 Bayern Munich (1976-77 Bundesliga)
Cramer’s Bayern faced Saarbrücken in the 30th matchday of Bundesliga 1976-77 at Ludwigsparkstadion. Bayern lined up with a star-studded team with Muller and Rumminiege leading the attack, Beckenbauer in defence and Sepp Maier in front of the net. Despite that, Saarbrucken scored two goals in the first half through Roland Stegmayer’s brace. Stegmayer struck again in the second half. Gerd Muller scored his 22nd goal of the season by pulling one back for the Bavarians. But Stegmayer scored again to restore a three-goal lead. Denz and Schuster scored each in the last 10 mins to complete the 6-goal hammering of Bayern.
4. Kickers Offenbach 6-0 Bayern Munich (1974-75 Bundesliga)
It was Bayern’s 10th season in the Bundesliga. Udo Lattek was Bayern’s manager as they started the season by travelling to Deutsche Bank Park. But they were hammered by Offenbach in front of 36,000 rival fans. Bayern boasted a front three of Hoeness, Muller and Rumminiege and Beckenbauer at the back. Offenbach scored two first-half goals through Winfried Schäfer and Dieter Schwemmle. They scored four more goals in the second half to end the game with an incredible 6-0 victory over Bayern.
3. Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 Bayern Munich (1975-76 Bundesliga)
Under newly appointed manager Dietmar Cramer, Bayern hooked on to bounce back after a disastrous 1974-75 Bundesliga season. They lost just four games from fourteen games ahead of their game against Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank Park. Bayern started with a 4-3-3 formation with Rumminiege leading their attack. However, things started to heat up early in the game as Wenzel opened the scoring for Frankfurt in the 8th minute. Nickel, Grabowski, Holzenbein and Neuburger added another four goals in the first half to extended Frankfurt’s lead to five. Bernd Nickel scored past Maier again in the second half directly through a corner to make it six on the scoresheet.
2. Fortuna Düsseldorf 7-1 Bayern Munich (1978-79 Bundesliga)
Bayern had finished seventh in the 1977-78 Bundesliga season under Dettmar Cramer and appointed Gyulo Lorent to help them bounce back. They had a decent start to the season as they lost four games in the first 15 games of the season. But they were outclassed by Tippenhauer’s Dusseldorf in the 15th league game. Dusseldorf took the lead in the 1st minute itself through Allofs’ left-footed shot. Bayern defender Augenthaler pulled one back to level the score for the visitors. However, Dusseldorf went on to score six more goals to end the game 7-1 at home. Allofs, Gunther and Wolfgang Seel scored braces and Zimmerman scored one for Dusseldorf.
1. Bayern Munich 0-7 Schalke (1976-77 Bundesliga)
Bayern’s biggest defeat in their history came against Schalke and that too at their home stadium in front of 50,000 fans. Cramer’s Bayern had lost just once before hosting Schalke at home. Bayern started with a 4-3-3 formation with Beckenbauer as a sweeper. But they conceded two first-half goals at home with Fischer and Kremers scoring for Schalke. Fischer scored a second-half hattrick to make it four for himself. Dubski and Abramczik scored the other two goals in the 7-0 hauling of Bayern.
