Liverpool have been one of the most successful clubs in European football over the past decade, with Jürgen Klopp's era producing some of the best football in the club's history. However, several players who left Anfield discovered that life after Liverpool was considerably more difficult.
From expensive transfers that failed spectacularly to moves that saw established stars lose their status, here are five players who left Liverpool and struggled badly afterwards.
5. Jordan Henderson — Al-Ettifaq
Jordan Henderson's Liverpool career was almost the complete opposite of a failure. The midfielder made 492 appearances, scored 33 goals and captained the club to seven major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.
However, his decision to leave Liverpool for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in 2023 marked the beginning of a strange decline.
Henderson spent only half a season in Saudi Arabia before returning to Europe with Ajax. His Al-Ettifaq spell produced just 19 appearances, and he eventually returned to England with Brentford before moving to Chelsea in 2026.
For a player who had been Liverpool's inspirational captain, the post-Anfield years have been a significant step down.
4. Georginio Wijnaldum — PSG
Georginio Wijnaldum was one of the most reliable midfielders in Klopp's Liverpool team. He made 237 appearances and scored 22 goals for the Reds, winning the Premier League and Champions League.
His move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 looked like an opportunity to join another European giant. Instead, his time in France quickly became underwhelming.
Wijnaldum made 38 appearances in his first PSG season but scored only three goals and struggled to establish himself as an undisputed starter.
He was subsequently loaned to Roma before eventually moving to Saudi Arabia. Ironically, Wijnaldum has rediscovered his goalscoring touch there, but his European career never reached the level many expected after his Liverpool success.
3. Sadio Mané — Bayern Munich
Sadio Mané left Liverpool in 2022 as one of the world's most feared forwards.
The Senegalese star scored 120 goals and provided 48 assists in 259 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.
Bayern Munich appeared to be the perfect destination. Instead, his single season in Germany became a major disappointment.
Mané made 38 appearances for Bayern in 2022–23 but scored only 12 goals, including seven in the Bundesliga. His campaign was also overshadowed by controversy and disciplinary problems.
After just one season, Bayern moved him on to Al-Nassr. Considering how devastating Mané had been at Liverpool, his rapid decline at the European elite level was remarkable.
2. Trent Alexander-Arnold — Real Madrid
Trent Alexander-Arnold's story is still being written, but his move from Liverpool to Real Madrid has already produced plenty of debate.
The right-back left Anfield after making 354 appearances, scoring 23 goals and providing 86 assists, while winning eight major trophies.
At Liverpool, Trent was one of the defining players of the Klopp era and one of the most influential attacking full-backs in football.
Real Madrid represents a completely different environment, however, with enormous expectations and intense competition for places. Injuries and adaptation have made his transition less straightforward than many expected.
It would be premature to say Trent has destroyed his career, but leaving Liverpool at his peak was undoubtedly a huge gamble.
1. Philippe Coutinho — Barcelona
Philippe Coutinho is the clearest example of a Liverpool departure going spectacularly wrong.
At Liverpool, Coutinho developed into one of the Premier League's most exciting attacking midfielders. His performances earned him a blockbuster move to Barcelona in January 2018.
His first year at Barça was promising, with 15 goals in his first 45 official appearances. But things quickly deteriorated.
Coutinho eventually made 113 appearances and scored 28 goals for Barcelona, winning two La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. Yet he never came close to becoming the superstar Barcelona expected after spending a huge fee to sign him.
A loan to Bayern Munich brought Champions League glory, and famously included his two goals against Barcelona in Bayern's historic 8-2 victory. After returning to Barça, Coutinho's career continued to decline through spells at Aston Villa, Al-Duhail and elsewhere.
Final Verdict
Liverpool have produced countless stars, but leaving Anfield has not always worked out for those players.
Henderson, Wijnaldum and Mané all experienced significant career downturns after leaving, while Trent's Real Madrid chapter remains unfinished. But Coutinho remains the ultimate cautionary tale.
He left Liverpool as one of the world's most exciting attackers and never again reached the extraordinary level he had established at Anfield.
