The La Liga fixture list for the 2022/23 season is out with 20 teams gearing up for another campaign for stories to tell. The league title stayed in Madrid last season but it switched sides from the redb and white of Atletico to Los Blancos. Carlo Ancelloti backed at the helm became the first manager to win the league in Europe’s top five leagues also winning the Champions League a record four times in the same season. For Real Madrid, it was a dominant performance in the La Liga uncatchable from the rest as they went on to collect 86 points with 26 wins and only four losses. The new season brings in the excitement of whether Real can defend their title or if their rivals could take the crown next year.
The unusual period of hosting the World Cup in the tournament history will bring changes to the schedule for the new La Liga season like never before. The league will open with the game between Osasuna and Sevilla at El Sadar on 13th August 2022. Jostling with their financial situation, Barcelona are hoping to manage better in the season with new economic deals and starts at home with the stadium now branded as ‘Spotify Camp Nou’ against promoted side Real Valladolid. Real Madrid will start their title defence against another promoted team in Almeria in an away game the next day. Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid makes the short trip to Getafe to kick off their campaign.
Barcelona meet Sevilla at Sanchez Pizjuan in a tough fixture to start September. Julien Lopetuigi’s side also face Villarreal and Atletico Madrid back to back in the month itself. Real Madrid have an easy run of games on paper until they too play a huge game in the Madrid derby against Atletico on 18th of September. The first El Classico comes around in the middle of October with the top two in Spain colliding with each other. The last round of games before the World Cup is scheduled on 9th November. The showpiece in Qatar begins on 21st November and runs until the final on 18th December. Action in La Liga will resume on the last day of the year. Opening games in 2023 from 8th January will see Atletico welcoming Barcelona at Wanda Metropolitano. The last set of fixtures is on 4th June 2023. Fixtures will be rearranged for certain clubs for their participation in European Competitions or cup competitions.
