The Spaniard transformed a club that was fending off a relegation battle last season to the summit of the German top flight in the 2023/24 campaign. Die Werkself broke Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance in the league and stunningly finished 17 points above them. Their achievement was remarkable in the sense that they did not lose any game in doing so and the chance to complete a historical treble with the DFB Pokal Cup and the Europa League trophy up for grabs. The speciality for the side was their determination to maintain their unbeaten streak by making some unforeseen late comebacks in matches. Hence, Leverkusens first Bundesliga triumph will be remembered fondly.
Here are the records Bayer Leverkusen set or broke in the Bundesliga this season
Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga for the first time and became the 13th different club to have won the title.
They are the first team in Bundesliga history to go unbeaten across a full season. Only Arsenal in 2003-04 and Juventus in 2011-12 had achieved the same in the big five European leagues since the millennium.
Die Werkself have stayed unbeaten in 51 matches in all competitions, an unprecedented record in Europe’s big five leagues
Bayer also recorded the highest point tally in club history by taking 90 points from 34 matches. This is also the second-most points ever recorded in the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen finished with 28 wins in the league this season, breaking their previous tally of most wins (21).
Bayer Leverkusen are the third side to remain unbeaten in all away matches in Bundesliga history, picking up 14 wins in 17 matches. Bayern Munich had the monopoly before by achieving the same in 1986-87 and 2012-13 seasons.
The 2023/24 Bundesliga winners also became the first team to go undefeated in the first 29 games of a Bundesliga season (W25 D4), breaking the record set by FC Bayern in the 2013-14 season, who went 28 games unbeaten under Pep Guardiola.
Xabi Alonso’s side has kept 16 clean sheets in the Bundesliga this season, equalling their club record from 2014-15.
The team has scored 89 goals in 34 matches this season which is the second most tally recorded in Bundesliga history.
Leverkusen has seen three players Victor Boniface (13 goals), Florian Wirtz (11) and Álex Grimaldo (10) score more than 10 goals in a season for the first time since 2003-04.
Die Werkself have also scored 87 goals in the league this season, extending their new club record set this term. They end the season with the most goals from distance (11), set-pieces (23) and in the final 15 minutes of matches (19).
Florian Wirtz with 11 goals and 11 assists and Álex Grimaldo with 10 goals and 13 assists are also the third duo on record to reach double figures in both goals and assists in a Bundesliga season.
Remarkably, Grimaldo is unbeaten in his first 32 Bundesliga appearances. Only Javi Martínez has featured in more league games before suffering his first defeat with 39. The Portuguese left-back has also assisted 13 goals in the league this season which is a new club record.
