VIE-W vs NED-W Match Preview
Vietnam’s debut Women’s World Cup ended prematurely after the team lost 2-0 to Portugal in their second group game. The result confirms their exit from the group stages having suffered defeat in the opening game as well to the USA. However, the Asian nation will be pleased with their defensive solidity conceding just twice from nine shots on target and 29 overall. The same they did against the holders, conceding just three from seven accurate shots. With little to play for, the Golden Stars will hope to produce another competitive performance in the final match against the Netherlands. Mai Duc Chung's side will take into consideration that the 2019 finalists have not scored more than a goal in this tournament. Although having lost their previous five matches with 18 conceded and just one scored, Vietnam will be fearing for the worst. They are wanting to avoid becoming the only second team from Asia to lose all of their group matches in the final without scoring a goal after Japan in 1991.
The Netherlands would have wished for more as they took the lead against the USA in the rematch of the 2019 final. Jill Roord’s sublime finish gave the advantage before half-time but Lindsey Horan’s bullet header unmarked from a corner in the 62nd minute meant they had to settle for a point. Andries Jonker will be happy for his team collecting four points from the opening two games with a 1-0 win over Portugal starting things off. Moreover, the draw against the record champions will feel like a win to face the other top sides as they go deeper into the tournament. Their two winless games in the last seven Women’s World Cup matches have been against the same opposition, the Dutch will be optimistic to complete their objective in Wellington in the final group game. The Netherlands will secure their place in the round of 16 if they avoid defeat against Vietnam. With the USA sitting in the top spot on goal difference, their aim will be to win with a bigger margin in the match to mark themselves as group winners. Knowing the holders will also try to do the same in their match against Portugal.
