SDFC vs KBFC Match Preview
Sreenidi expected a tough challenge from Bengaluru FC in the Hero Super Cup 2023 group stage opener so did not back down when Javi Hernandez put the ISL side ahead within 10 minutes. Withstanding the early storm, the I-League runners-up slowly got back into the game and equalized through their ever-present skipper Faysal Shayesteh who grabbed his second of the tournament after scoring in the qualifying round against Neroca FC. The shot from the Afghani took a deflection off defender Parag Srivas to rest in Gurpreet’s net. The Deccan Warriors arguably created the better chances from there going close twice to take the lead but at the same time kept their defense watertight to end it 1-1 on the day. It was a historic point for Carlos Pinto’s team in the first-ever Hero Super Cup participation, a result that will inspire them while facing another ISL outfit in Kerala Blasters. Winning the next game will almost put them in the driving seat for the semifinals which will be a remarkable story to tell but Blasters have their own tale to make as well.
The Tuskers made a brilliant response to a tough few weeks for them with the walkout decision and the subsequent punishments from the AIFF by defeating I-League champions RoundGlass Punjab 3-1. The victory was not straightforward but the three points showed Kerala Blasters brushed out their negativity in front of the home support. With the score locked in 0-0 before half-time, a series of errors from opposition keeper Kiran Limbu and then by defender Valpuia led to Sourav Das being fouled inside the box by the latter. Blasters’ star striker Dimitrios Diamantakos buried the resulting spot-kick to put his side ahead. The lead was doubled by right-back Nishu Kumar barely five minutes into the second-half who placed it perfectly to finish off a quality move. Rahul KP, on as a substitute, got the final goal right at the death for the Yellow Army but not before RoundGlass Punjab deservedly got themselves on the scoresheet in a long period of sustained pressure from them. Kerala Blasters will put up a step closer to the semifinals if they win for the consecutive time in the group stages.
