PSG vs NUFC Match Preview
Paris Saint-Germain will accomplish two tasks with a victory against Newcastle United at home in their midweek Champions League clash. The Ligue 1 winners have the chance to take revenge for their 4-1 loss in the reverse fixture at St James’ Park and also move top of Group F. At least momentarily, if Dortmund manage to beat AC Milan in the other simultaneous kick-off. Luis Enrique's side also grabbed the familiar first place in their domestic league with a huge 5-2 victory over title rivals Monaco making it six wins on the spin. However, it was on the European front they struggled with consistency having lost to Milan 2-1 at San Siro in the last Champions League outing. PSG have suffered two losses in four group matches so far this season all coming in away games. There is a different picture at home though with the emphatic display over Dortmund and Milan, winning the ties 2-0 and 3-0 respectively, with just one loss in the last five such matches in the competition. The team have lost six of their last eight Champions League meetings with English clubs but are confident of picking a third straight win at Parc des Princes.
There were five different goal-scorers for PSG in their 5-2 win over Monaco and Newcastle United did something similar in their eye-grabbing 4-1 victory over Chelsea at home with four different goal-scorers. That win helped them bounce back from a shock 2-0 loss to relegation battlers Bournemouth and a 2-0 defeat to leaders Dortmund in their Champions League group. Also, the manner of victory could be motivating for their side to rescue their European campaign returning to the big times after 19 years. Newcastle remain bottom of Group F with only four points gathered from four games, the last two have been losses. Their only success came against PSG in that historic night at home but they are yet to win or score in away games. Their only point in the Champions League this season on the road came in the goalless draw in Milan on the opening match-day. The Magpies will be desperate to change their poor record in the trip to Paris in order to place themselves in the group’s top two. It will require an enormous task from an injury-ravaged squad to do so.
