POR-W vs VIE-W Match Preview
In their debut appearance at the Women's World Cup, Portugal started their journey with a 1-0 loss to the Netherlands. Despite restricting the 2019 finalists to few chances, Stefanie van der Gragt’s 13th-minute header from a corner made the difference in the game. They defended valiantly in the match but scoring goals became an issue for the side yet again. Especially against a top opposition after also playing a 0-0 draw against England in the warm-up. At the same time, their defence only allowed two goals in four matches. Portugal only managed to produce one shot on target during the game, which came from their only touch in the penalty box. The two Silva-s in the forward line, Jessica Silva and Diana Silva were devoid of services. Manager Francisco Neto will address the issues against Vietnam, another newcomer, in their second match of the group. A first win in the Women’s World Cup is on the cards which will mark a successful campaign at the finals for the Selecao. However, qualifying for the knockout rounds seems not feasible with the holders USA to face in the final group game. Hence, finishing third could be a realistic target for the team.
Vietnam will take note of the fact that Portugal have got just one victory in their last five matches as they aim for their first point in their debut Women’s World Cup. The Golden Stars went down 3-0 to title defenders USA in their first-ever match in the tournament with a brace from Sophia Smith and Lindsey Horan adding the other. For Mai Chung’s side, the positive was they didn’t receive the same battering in the opener against USWNT which fellow Asian nation Thailand faced four years ago in France. That time the score ended 13-0 marking the biggest margin of victory in the tournament history. Vietnam was always going to be on the wrong side taking on the best-ranked team in the world but it is not an excuse for the work that remains to be done. Improvement in the attack is needed as they became the first team to fail to attempt a single shot in the tournament since 2011. The team suffered their third consecutive defeat, failing to score and allowing 14 goals during that time. In order to remain in the competition, they must put on an impressive performance during their second group game.
