So far, the debut AFC Cup campaign has not gone according to the plan for Odisha FC. After suffering a 4-0 humiliation against fellow ISL side Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their first-ever game in the competition, they lost again this time to Basundhara Kings of Bangladesh in a 3-2 thriller. Despite taking the lead in the game through Diego Mauricio, the Kalinga warriors were stung by the Kings scoring three goals in the space of 16 minutes. Although Left-back Jerry Lalrinzuala reduced the deficit and striker Roy Krishna hit the crosspiece later on in the game, Odisha FC failed to make the comeback in the game. Sergio Lobera will urge his side sitting bottom of their AFC Cup group after two games and winless in their last three matches to turn things around quickly. The side has struggled massively in defence in this tournament and hopes Mourtada Fall’s return from suspension will help them keep a clean sheet. The Juggernauts have to win against Maziya in the third group stage game or else their chance for knockout qualification could be over.
Maziya put up a commendable fight against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the opposition’s ground almost snatching a draw in the eventual 2-1 loss. That winner from the Mariners by Jason Cummings came in the dying embers of the game. The Maldives champions put up a great defensive show with their goalkeeper Hussain Shareef pulling out an outstanding seven saves in the match. Also managed to level up the score before half-time with a rocket strike from the Japanese Tomoki Wada. While they did not have the result to show for it like their 3-1 win over Basundhara Kings in the opener, there were plenty of positives to take from their resilient display. Maziya currently sits second on the virtue of goal difference and are hoping for a victory that will take them to the top at least momentarily. Last boys Odisha FC are still a force to reckon with for the stars they have in the squad but Maziya will be fearless about their prospect as they travel to the Kalinga Stadium for the game.
