OFC vs EBFC Match Preview
Odisha FC managed to survive a crunching battle for the ISL playoffs by finishing sixth in the final spot for the knockouts. The Juggernauts though failed to progress further into the competition, losing 2-0 to eventual champions ATK Mohun Bagan in the eliminator match. Despite getting into the playoffs, the performances were not keen to the supporters and the club decided to let go of Josep Gombau from the managerial role after the ISL season ended. In his place, former Indian international Clifford Miranda took charge to supervise proceedings in the Super Cup. Drawn with Hyderabad FC, East Bengal and Aizawl FC, the Juggernauts will have to work hard to reach the top spot which will allow them to enter the semifinals of the 2023 Super Cup. They face the Red and Gold in the opening group stage game whom they beat twice in the ISL so confidence will be bubbling inside them to make it three in a row against them this season. Odisha FC have also lost only once in the last six meetings with this one being played for the first time in any competition outside the ISL.
It is a sorrow-record East Bengal carries in this fixture as they are desperate to do well in the Super Cup after another underwhelming campaign in the ISL. Although there were some positives in the past season like beating Shield Winners Mumbai City, the Kolkata giants were largely unconvincing with same factors of mismanagement, manager choice and team building plaguing them yet again. The Torch Bearers finished ninth as they did in their first season in the ISL gathering only 19 points and managing only six wins. The figures were an improvement from the last two campaigns but absolutely not enough to mark any sign of progress the club has done. East Bengal are linked with ISL-winning coach Sergio Lobera to take them back to their glory days as they prepare for their last competition under Stephen Constantine. Nothing is confirmed with Lobera as of yet but these are the serious works the club has to put in order to rise to their known levels. For now, their sole focus is producing their best in the Hero Super Cup 2023 with a challenging group to overcome.
