After a lot of uncertainty about the match taking place during Durga Puja festivities in Kolkata and the visa issue for the visitors, Mohun Bagan will finally play their third group game of the AFC Cup against Bashundhara Kings in a changed venue in Bhubaneshwar. That too two hours after the other group game, Odisha FC taking on Maziya, finishes on the same turf. However, the surroundings will not be too unfamiliar for the Mariners despite it being a neutral venue away from home. They demolished the actual home team Odisha FC 4-0 to start the tournament in this stadium and are willing to carry on their 10-game winning streak in all competitions. Mohun Bagan had to work hard in the last AFC Cup game, the 2-1 victory over Maziya at Salt Lake Stadium after Jason Cummings turned from villain to hero scoring the late winner. The Australian gave the Green and Maroons the lead before making a blunder by trying to create a penalty pass goal. Maziya came back into the game but all ended well for Juan Ferrando’s men who now sit top of the table with back-to-back wins.
Mohun Bagan will take on familiar opposition Bashundhara Kings whom they have beaten in the past. The team from Bangladesh arrived in India only a day ahead of the match after a standoff due to the non-availability of visas. With no training session and little preparation for the away game, the team could be disadvantaged as they take on an in-form side. After losing 3-1 to Maziya in the opener, Bashundhara Kings turned their fortunes around in the second game winning 3-2 against another ISL side Odisha FC. They are placed third ahead of facing Mohun Bagan and another win will take them level on points with goal-difference still keeping the Mariners on top in that scenario. It is a far cry for the Bangladeshi champions who have lost the recent meetings against the ISL trophy holders and are not in an ideal situation this time around. Even with their firing foreign front line, the solidity of Mohun Bagan Super Giant is hard to break down. However, the opposition has shown some shaky moments in them.
