MIL vs NEW Match Preview
Milan received a historical battering from city rivals Inter in the Derby della Madonna at the weekend in Serie A. Henrikh Mkhitaryan became the nemesis for Rossoneri again with a brace after his goals knocked them out of the Champions League last season in the 5-1 victory with Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu’s penalty and Davide Frattesi adding to the tally. Although, Rafael Leao’s strike while 2-0 down did give some hope although Milan failed to take advantage of it. The momentum carried from the first three wins of the season was washed away. Stefano Pioli’s side will hope for an instant turnaround with their next fixture in Europe against Newcastle. Having reached the last four of the Champions League last season, the expectation will be to match the feat amid the challenge increasing in the competition. With the change in format next season, the task will be more difficult. Aside from the huge derby loss and being named the away side for the clash, Milan have lost just once in their last 13 competitive matches at San Siro. That would give them some confidence to start the new continental season with a victory.
Newcastle United experienced a special moment in club history as they secured a Champions League berth last season. Heavily backed by the PIF, the club has turned their fortunes around and will compete at this level two decades later. They are also feeling the heat of the contest before even kicking the ball having grouped with Paris Saint-Germain, Dortmund and AC Milan. On paper, it looks hard for the Magpies to grab the first two spots in the group which will take them to the knockouts. Yet, beginning with a positive result could change the narrative as they prepare for a challenging trip to San Siro to face AC Milan. Newcastle’s last game there ended 2-2 with the other club from the city back in 2002-03 season but this will be the first competitive meeting between the pair. After suffering three successive losses in the Premier League to Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton, the normalcy returned against Bournemouth at the right time but only with a 1-0 margin. Callum Wilson scored the winning spot-kick in a game full of drama. Newcastle will aim to translate it into a victory in their return to European nights.
