MSR vs OFC Match Preview
Maziya’s defensive solidity took a massive blow in the last AFC Cup game by losing 6-1 to Odisha FC at the Kalinga Stadium. Even though they equalized through Branimir Jočić after falling behind inside just three minutes, they could have done little in the impending storm. Their goal difference was severely affected in the defeat with them now hugging the bottom of the table despite having the same points as the Juggernauts in third. It could also potentially kill any hope of qualification for them. Despite starting the campaign on a high with a 3-1 victory over the Bangladesh league champions Bashundhara Kings and then losing narrowly through a late-minute winner from Mohun Bagan Super Giant, the embarrassing defeat to Odisha FC means Maziya now have to pick up positive results in the next three matches to stay in the contest. Starting with the reverse fixture against the ISL side in Maldives, Maziya wants to make the home atmosphere intimidating to collect back-to-back home victories in the competition following two tough away trips to India.
The big win against Maziya allowed Odisha FC to put their AFC Cup campaign on the right track after two disheartening losses to start it. Going down 4-0 as 10-men to Mohun Bagan at the Kalinga Stadium and losing 3-2 at Bangladesh. The victory over Maziya now keeps them four points off the top spot and they could close it down to one with another win. At least momentarily, with the group’s top two going head-to-head later in the day. The Juggernauts will face the same opponents in the reverse fixture but at their den. That could be worrisome for the Super Cup winners as their away track record has not been good recently contrary to their winning form at home. Not only in the AFC Cup as seen in the loss against Bashundhara Kings, Odisha FC has struggled in the ISL too with only one win in the last nine matches on the travel. The record has not improved under Sergio Lobera as they have lost all three away fixtures in all competitions this season. Despite that, the Juggernauts hope they can achieve what they wish on their trip to Maldives.
