JAM-W vs BRA-W Match Preview
Jamaica made history by winning their first-ever game in the World Cup by edging out debutants Panama 1-0. The Reggae Girlz dug deep and finally got the breakthrough in the 56th minute when Allyson Swaby head home from Trudi Carter's corner. They did it without the suspended Kathija Shaw, who picked up a second yellow in the goalless draw against France in the opener, which makes the win a little more special. Jamaica will have their star striker back for the pivotal encounter against Brazil and will be hoping to pull off an upset as this Women’s World Cup has repeatedly shown. With four points from the first two games and stopping a side like France who then went to beat Brazil, there is every reason to think a positive result can be taken against the Selecao. They will advance to the last-16 if they avoid defeat against the Copa America winners. A defeat will require France somehow stumble against a Panama team waving goodbye to the tournament. The CONCACAF nation was knocked out of the group stages in their only ever participation in the finals four years ago and will not wish a repeat of it in 2023.
After thrashing newcomers Panama 4-0 with mesmeric football in the opener, Brazil’s confidence came crashing down when they met France in the second group game. Eugenie Le Sommer gave Les Bleues the lead after a strong start but Brazil responded well with Debinha finding the back of the net two minutes before the hour-mark. Just as it was looking like Pia Sundhage’s side will escape with a draw, they made the mistake of letting France captain Wendie Renard free at the back post to plant her header from a corner. The loss was a significant blow as Brazil cannot think of anything other than a win in the final group game to keep them alive in the competition. They are on three points and out of the top two places on the table. A point separates them from second-place Jamaica whom they will face in the last group game. The South American giants will still not be safe for the knockouts, having qualified in each edition, if they draw as they will then need Panama to do a massive favour for them playing against France. However, having beaten the Reggae Girlz quite comfortably last time with Cristiane scoring a hat trick in 2019, Brazil will hope to clinch their last-16 berth.
