GER-W vs COL-W Match Preview
Germany began their ninth Women’s World Cup finals with a dominating 6-0 victory over debuting Morocco. Undoubtedly, Alexandra Popp got on the scoresheet not once but twice in the first half with all being headers. Klara Buhl scored in the first action after half-time before two own-goals deserted the African side more. Lea Schuller was able to add a sixth late in the match coming on as a substitute. Their display even though against the lower ranked nations was their intent of revisiting their glory days of the competition being two-time champions. Die Nationalelf have almost made their way to the last-16 secured continuing their record of reaching the knockout stage at every edition of the Women’s World Cup. All they need is a win against Colombia in their next game and hope Morocco avoids defeat against a South Korean team without a point from their opener. The game against the South American nation could be tricky as Germany could be prone to their counter-attacks. Morocco also cause serious problems going beyond the defensive line but their efforts were ruled offside. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's side have not lost to a team belonging to the CONMEBOL. With midfielder Lena Oberdorf and centre-back Marina Hegering returning, they will want to maintain that record.
Colombia also had an electric start to their 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign and their third finals overall. They collected just their second win in the competition history by beating South Korea 2-0. Catalina Usme gave her side the lead from the penalty spot before Linda Caicedo doubled the score-line in her tournament debut. Withstanding the early storm from the Asian giants, Las Chicas hit the side with their counters which gave them the goals. They saw the rest of the games in a similar fashion as the South Koreans looked clueless in trying to come back into the game. Colombia extended their unbeaten run to four games ahead of facing the biggest test in their group in Germany. The South American nation have good momentum in their hand but needs to keep their defence strong in this clash. There is not much weight riding on their shoulders as they face Morocco in the final game with a chance to move into the knockouts. However, a severe loss will lower their confidence after such a great start. Colombia will hope to take at least a point in the clash because causing a surprise victory will require the absolute best from them in every sector.
