FC Goa is set to play Chennaiyin FC in back-to-back matches, in the playoffs this time, after defeating them 4-1 in the final league match to secure the third spot. Carlos Marinez bagged a brace with Borja Herrera and Brandon Fernandes scored in the victory from a goal down to boost their morale ahead of the playoffs. With the Marina Machans standing in their way again on the same ground, the Gaurs are renewing the rivalry at this stage again after 2020. Having led the table last year without losing a match, Manolo Marquez’s team failed to stay in the Shield race for several factors and finished four points away from the top. However, the Gaurs have secured qualification to the inaugural SAFF Club Championship and carry a chance to win the ISL trophy to round off a decent season for them. Once again it was Owen Coyle who guided the club to the knockout. Chennaiyin lost the ISL final back in 2020 so they are willing to go a step further this time to win a third title in history. It will be nothing short of a miracle for the team that has hogged the bottom half of the table for most parts. Defeating FC Goa will be a challenge having suffered heavy defeats in league meetings this season although they triumphed in the last playoff encounter of this fixture. Coyle’s side will be counting their superior record in this fixture in the knockouts to take them through to the semis.
