ENG-W vs DEN-W Match Preview
England edged Haiti with a 1-0 victory in their opening group-stage game of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The Lionesses got the breakthrough thanks to Georgia Stanway's retaken penalty in the first half. The newcomers put on a fantastic performance, limiting the European champions to only a few opportunities with their dogged defence. They also repeatedly went behind England’s backline with Mary Earps making a crucial save late in the game to deny them a shock result. The performance of England was lacklustre and they were not as impressive as they were last summer. The absence of the injured stars who contributed to their Euro victory was clearly felt, as the defence appeared nervous and there was a noticeable lack of creativity in the match. Also, failing to unlock a stubborn defence meant England have failed to score from open play in the last three matches. This is a big concern knowing fellow Europeans in Denmark will make life difficult for them as well. Having three in-form strikers in rank, England must start firing quickly. Returning to winning ways after three matches will help in that cause as they look to secure a place in the last-16 with a game to spare.
Denmark also scrapped out a 1-0 win over Asian champions China in a tight battle requiring a late header from substitute Amalie Vangsgaard to settle it. The Danes didn't have a great performance like England, but they managed to secure three points, which boosted their confidence for their upcoming match against the Lionesses. Lars Sondergaard’s team have also won six of their last seven matches giving them a healthy momentum too. Their defence performed solidly in five of those matches, including the clean sheet in the tournament's opening game. Denmark are hoping to involve Pernille Harder more in the play knowing two of her ex-club teammates will guard the opposition defence. The team has never reached the knockout stages of a Women’s World Cup. Hence, doing it on their return to the stage by winning back-to-back games in the final will be something to cherish.
