COL-W vs JAM-W Match Preview
Placed in a group with competition regulars South Korea and two-time champions Germany, many would not have predicted Colombia to seal a knockout place. Yet, they managed not only to beat the favourites but top their group. A comfortable 2-0 victory over the Asian giants and then following with a dramatic and historic 2-1 victory over Die Nationalelf set them on their way. Much of the credit goes to the exceptional talent in 18-year-old Linda Caicedo who scored two crucial goals in those victories. However, the South American team with their incredible fan support suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Morocco in the final group game. While it did not restrict them from reaching their target of qualifying to the last 16 for the second time in only three final appearances, the defeat killed their winning momentum in the tournament. Still, the occasion of a knockout battle is sure to change the mood of the team again as shown by slewing the giants. Colombia are the last remaining team from the CONMEBOL region after the elimination of Argentina and surprisingly Brazil from the group stages. Las Chicas will face fellow giant-killers Jamaica in the round of 16 in the hope of reaching the quarterfinals for the very first time in the tournament.
Jamaica’s story in the campaign has been equally impressive. Holding France to a goalless draw, registering their first-ever win at the Women’s World Cup stage against fellow nation Panama and going a step further by knocking out Brazil in a massive shock to grab the runners-up spot in the group. The Reggae Girlz played out a scoreless draw again in the historic game for the nation and made it to the knockouts for the very first time. Impressively, they made it out of a tough group on paper without conceding a goal, the only side left to lose their clean sheet record, where they leaked 12 in group stage elimination of their debut World Cup four years ago. Jamaica became the first Caribbean nation to reach the World Cup knockouts of any gender since 1938 and only the third side from the Concacaf region after the USA and Canada in the Women’s tournament. While they remain the only one left in this contest after both were eliminated alongside newcomers Panama. Hoping to create more history in the contest in another big test in Colombia, Lorne Donaldson will be hoping to get their attacking firing to release some pressure on their immensely disciplined defence.
