Although Chennaiyin FC remains in the hunt for playoff places in the ISL, levelled with sixth-placed NorthEast United on points but separated by their tad inferior goal difference, their performances have been less than convincing in the ISL even with star coach Owen Coyle back at their helm. The Marina Machans have collected only three wins from 12 matches and lost half of them. The 3-0 loss to Mumbai City in the last game of 2023 exposed everything wrong with the side this campaign although they suffered an embarrassing result a game prior. Chennaiyin FC lost to Punjab FC in Delhi giving the promoted side their first win of the season in the ISL after they struggled for the first 10 games to get one. As their faith goes, Owen Coyle’s side will face the Shers again one final time this season or so in the opener of their Kalinga Super Cup 2024 campaign. Also battling Mumbai City and Gokulam, Chennaiyin FC will be desperate to get off to a good start by taking revenge on the I-League winners whom they crushed 5-1 in the first-ever ISL meeting back in October last year.
It was Madih Talal who got the winner in the last encounter against Chennaiyin FC giving Punjab FC their long-desired ISL victory. However, Staikos Vergetis’s team did little to hold on to their piece of history by losing their final ISL game before the Asian Cup break to Odisha FC. The sixth defeat of the season puts them second bottom of the chart but with no relegation to worry about, the Shers will continue to hunt for glory with their pragmatic play. The Kalinga Super Cup will give them tough competition with the I-League holders desperate to avoid a bottom-place finish like the previous edition. Although they face a side that conceded the most goals in the ISL in their Super Cup opener, Punjab FC have a scoring crisis of themselves merely managing nine. The win in the December clash should give the Shers motivation to repeat the result but they are plagued by inconsistency as well.
