ARS vs LEN Match Preview
Arsenal are well-placed to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League leading their group with nine points from four games. The Gunners are four points better than second-placed PSV Eindhoven and RC Lens in third. Earning a point will see them through to the knockout stage for the first since their last participation in the 2016–17 season. However, Mikel Arteta’s men have to do the job against the only team that managed to beat them in group stages this season in RC Lens. Arsenal lost the reverse clash 2-1 in France despite taking a 14th-minute lead through Gabriel Jesus. That was the third defeat the Gunners conceded in all competitions so far, all of them coming in away games. On the flip side, the current Premier League leaders have dropped points only once at home this season in all competitions. That includes the two home victories in the Champions League with a total of six goals scored without reply. Arsenal will look to seal a victory on Wednesday but even a defeat will do if PSV lose to Sevilla, who are already out of contention, in the other game.
Lens are willing to do the double over the North London side to boost their last-16 qualification chances but they have to show the same spirit of the last encounter in this difficult trip to produce another miracle. The Ligue 1 side started their debut Champions League campaign on a decent note, drawing against Europa League holders Sevilla and Eredivisie counterparts PSV in between that famous win over Arsenal. However, a 1-0 loss to the Dutch side in the reverse fixture slumps them to the third place in Group E with zero goal difference. Their only defeat in the last 12 games in all competitions. Despite having the same number of points as second-placed PSV, Lens hold a chance to stay in Europe even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League knockouts. They will be able to continue their journey in the Europa League but for that they need Sevilla to stay rock-bottom. Franck Haise’s team though will want control of their destiny and not rely on others doing them a favor.
