Suryakumar Yadav creates new T20I World Record

Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav is in great form with the bat this year as he managed two significant yearly T20I records during Thiruvananthapuram T20I last Wednesday (28th September) night. The right-handed batter moves on top of the list of most T20I sixes in a calendar year and most T20I runs by an Indian in a calendar year.

The Indian team dominated the three-match home T20I series opener against South Africa at Thiruvananthapuram last Wednesday night. After the hosts sent the Proteas to bat first, South Africa had a terrible start of 9/5 in 2.3 overs. Though they ultimately managed to score 106/8 (20 overs) and also initially troubled the hosts with the score of 17/2, India comfortably reached the target in 16.4 overs without losing any further wickets.

While the opener KL Rahul scored 51 not out off 56 balls (2 fours and 4 sixes), Suryakumar Yadav scored 50 not out off 33 balls (5 fours and 3 sixes). During that powerful batting performance, the 32-year-old Suryakumar created two new T20I records.

Suryakumar Yadav – Most T20I sixes in a calendar year  

Suryakumar is now the record holder of most T20I sixes in a calendar year. With his first six during the latest Thiruvananthapuram T20I, the right-handed batter surpassed Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Rizwan’s 42 T20I sixes record in 2021 and created a new T20I history.

At the end of that match, Suryakumar hit 45 T20I sixes in 2022. With five more sixes this year, the right-handed Indian batter will become the first cricketer to 50 T20I sixes in a calendar year.

Suryakumar Yadav – Most T20I runs by an Indian in a calendar year

During the latest Thiruvananthapuram T20I, Suryakumar started scoring with two consecutive sixes. With his second six of that game, the right-handed batter surpassed Shikhar Dhawan’s record of 689 T20I runs in 2018 and became the new record holder of most T20I runs by an Indian in a calendar year.

Suryakumar has now scored 732 runs in 21 innings in 2022. Currently, he is the fourth most T20I run-scorer in a calendar year.
