Though India Women suffered a close 11-run defeat against England Women in the Group 2 contest of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 at Gqeberha, the 27-year-old Indian right-arm pacer Renuka Singh claimed a fifer and recorded India’s best bowling figures in the tournament history.
Renuka Singh: 3 wickets in first 3 overs
After the Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur chose to field first, England Women had a struggling start. Before the completion of the first five overs, the English team was fighting on 29/3 as Renuka already sent the first three batters (Danni Wyatt 0, Alice Capsey 3, Sophia Dunkley 10) to the pavilion in her first three overs.
Later, Nat Sciver-Brunt (50), Amy Jones (40) and the skipper Heather Knight (28) helped the English side to manage the challenging first batting total of 151/7 in 20 overs.
Renuka Singh: 2 back-to-back wickets in the final over
In the last over of that innings, Renuka continued her shining moment by dismissing Amy Jones (40) and Katherine Sciver-Brunt (0) in successive deliveries. After completing her first international fifer, Renuka was very close to recording a WT20WC hat-trick on the final ball of that innings, but her yorker missed the wicket and resulted in a four-bye for the batting side.
Renuka Singh: 4-0-15-5
