India Women U19s created history by winning the inaugural ICC Women's Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2023 after thrashing the England Women U19s in the Final of the tournament.
Before this Final at Potchefstroom on Sunday (29th January), the English team was unbeaten in this competition, while the Indian team lost one game against Australia Women U19s in the Super 6 stage.
England Women U19s: 68 all out
In the Final match, the Indian captain Shafali Verma chose to field first. The English team was bundled out for only 68 runs in 17.1 overs. While Ryana MacDonald-Gay (19) was their highest scorer in that innings, Niamh Holland (10), Alexa Stonehouse (11) and Sophia Smale (11) were the other English cricketers to reach the double-digit scores.
Among the Indian bowlers, Titas Sadhu was the best with bowling figures of 4-0-6-2. Archana Devi (2/17) and Parshavi Chopra (2/13) also got two wickets each, while Mannat Kashyap (1/13), skipper Shafali Verma (1/16) and Sonam Yadav (1/3) collected a wicket each.
India Women U19s: 69/3
In reply, the Indian team chased down the 69-run target in 14 overs after losing three wickets. Soumya Tiwari (24*) and Gongadi Trisha (24) were the top scorers, and the opener Shafali Verma scored 15 runs.
Among the English bowlers, Hannah Baker (1/13), Grace Scrivens (1/13) and Alexa Stonehouse (1/8) took one wicket apiece but couldn’t save their dream.
Indian cricketer Titas Sadhu won the Player of the Match award for her impassive bowling performance.
On the other hand, English cricketer Grace Scrivens won the Player of the Tournament award for her incredible all-round performances in this competition. Apart from the left-hand batter scoring the second most runs in this tournament (293 runs), the off-spinner also finished as the joint fifth-most wicket-taker (nine wickets).
