Meg Lanning’s Australia Women once again showed their dominance in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 as they won their sixth WT20WC trophy to stretch their title-winning record. In the Final of that tournament, they beat the first-time finalists and hosts South Africa Women by 19 runs.
Newlands (Cape Town) hosted that remarkable Final of the eighth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. After the Aussies chose to bat first, they managed the first innings total of 156/6 in 20 overs. Opener Beth Mooney had a huge role in that innings as she scored 74 not out off 53 balls with the help of nine fours and only six.
In reply, South Africa Women fought hard but only managed to score 137/6 in 20 overs. While the opener Laura Wolvaardt scored 61 off 48 balls (five fours and three sixes), Chloe Tryon scored 25 off 23 balls.
Meg Lanning: 1st captain to lead in 100 T20 International matches
It was Meg Lanning’s 100th WT20I match as a captain for Australia Women. Considering both men’s and women’s T20I records, she became the first captain to lead a team in 100 T20 international matches.
Indian Women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur is very close to catching Lanning as Kaur has led her national team in 96 WT20Is.
In men’s T20I history, former Australian captain Aaron Finch is the record holder for most appearances as a captain with 76 matches.

Australia Women: 2nd time completed WT20WC trophy hat-tricks
It was the third straight ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title for the six-time WT20WC winners Australia Women. After lifting this trophy in the 2018 and 2020 editions, the Aussies have maintained their tournament domination in the latest edition.
It is the second time Australia Women successfully won three successive ICC Women’s T20 World Cup trophies. After England Women won the inaugural edition in 2009, Australia Women won the trophy in the 2010, 2012 and 2014 editions respectively. Before the beginning of their second WT20WC trophy-winning hat-tricks, West Indies Women were successful to stop them in 2016 Final.
