18 June 1975 saw one of the best all-round performances in World Cup History. It was the first ever England vs Australia match in the World Cup and ended as a thriller. The match was also the semi-final of the 1st World Cup and was played at Headingley in front of an excited Yorkshire crowd.
However, England lost the toss and in conditions very much loaded for bowlers were sent in to bat. For Australia Gary Gilmour, the left arm seam bowler was included for his first World Cup match. Gilmour, playing only his third One Day International opened the bowling with Lillee and immediately made an impact when he got Dennis Amiss plumb in front. He did not stop there and took the wickets of Barry Wood, Keith Fletcher, Tony Greig and Frank Hayes for single-digit scores when he got his sixth victim Alan Knott for a duck. England were tottering with 36 for the loss of six wickets. They were soon 37/7 and looking down the barrel. Captain Mike Denness and Geoff Arnold provided some stability with 27 and 18 respectively but England could only score 93 as Gilmour finished with 12-6-14-6.
