Men’s long jump final event at the World Athletics Championships 2023 (Budapest, Hungary) ended on a dramatic note, where the Tokyo 2020 Olympics gold medallist Miltiadis Tentoglou snatched a gold medal from the Jamaican Wayne Pinnock with his last jump of the event. Meanwhile, Indian Jeswin Aldrin had a disappointing finish.
World Athletics Championships 2023: Men’s Long Jump – The Dramatic Final Moment
On the sixth day of the World Athletics Championships 2023 (August 24), Greek star Miltiadis Tentoglou had a strong start with a jump of 8.50 metres.
Jamaican Wayne Pinnock also had an 8.50m jump on his second attempt, but he earned the leading position and carried on before Tentoglou’s last jump of the event. Pinnock (8.40m) was leading due to having a one-centimetre better second-best jump record than Tentoglou (8.39m) in that final event.
However, the latest Summer Olympics gold medallist shined with his last jump, which recorded his season-best performance of 8.52 metres. So, Pinnock ended the event with a silver medal.
World Athletics Championships 2023: Men’s Long Jump – More Jamaican battle for the bronze medal
Another Jamaican Tajay Gayle, the World Athletics Championships 2019 gold medallist, secured the bronze with his season-best jump of 8.27m. Although his another national teammate, Carey McLeod also reached the 8.27m, Gayle managed the podium place on countback.

Meanwhile, the Indian Jeswin Aldrin managed to finish the 11th spot in that 12-man long jump final. During his third attempt of the day, Aldrin managed to reach the mark of 7.77m.

What did Miltiadis Tentoglou say?
Before the ongoing World Athletics Championships, Tentoglou got a World Championship silver medal in the 2022 edition. However, the long jumper already won senior-level gold medals in the Olympics (2020), World Indoor Championships (2022), Diamond League (2022), European Championships (2018 and 2022), European Indoor Championships (2019, 2021 and 2023), and European Games (2023).
After winning his first World Athletics Championships gold, Tentoglou said, "The only gold medal I missed is now mine. It was a great competition, a great battle, better than last year. Now I'm going to defend all my titles."
