The 26-year-old Ajay Kumar Saroj has continued his glamorous record in the Asian Athletics Championships by winning a gold medal in the men’s 1500m event during the second day of the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand.
In the men’s 1500m event, Saroj took 3:41.51 seconds to finish the race and secure the gold medal for his country. It was the second gold for India in the ongoing Asian Athletics Championships 2023 after Jyothi Yarraji secured a gold medal in the women’s 100 meters hurdles.
In the men’s 1500m of the ongoing Bangkok event, Japanese Yusuke Takahashi earned the silver medal (3:42.04s), and Chinese Dezhu Liu clinched the bronze medal (3:42.30s).
Who is Ajay Kumar Saroj?
It wasn’t the first time that Saroj made a headline in the Asian Athletics Championships. After winning a gold medal in the men’s 1500m in the 2017 edition at Bhubaneshwar (3:45.85s), he earned a silver medal in the 2019 edition at Doha, Qatar (3:43.18s).
In the 2016 South Asian Games, Saroj won a gold medal in the men’s 1500m (3:53.46s) and a bronze medal in the men’s 800m events (1:52.04s).
Saroj has already clinched five National Championships gold medals in the men’s 1500m events and one National Championships gold medal in the men’s 800m event.
Jinson Johnson disappointed
Jinson Johnson, Indian men’s 800m and 1500m national record holder, finished in 11th place in the men’s 1500m event at Bangkok (3:46.91s).
In the Asian Games 2018, Johnson won a gold medal in the men’s 1500m event and a silver medal in the men’s 800m event.
Meanwhile, Johnson also won two medals in the men’s 800m events during the past Asian Athletics Championships (silver in 2015 and bronze in 2017).
