Recently, England and New Zealand played a historic Test match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, where the hosts remarkably beat the visitors New Zealand by five wickets.

Trailing the three-match Test series by 1-0, New Zealand batted first after losing the toss at the beginning of the recently concluded second Test of the series at Nottingham. While the visitors set up the first innings total of 553 runs, England replied with 539 runs.

Starting their second innings with a lead of 14 runs, the Blackcaps scored 284 runs and set up the fourth innings target of 299 runs for England. The home team chased that target incredibly in 50 overs after losing five wickets and secured the series by 2-0 with one Test to go.

In the first innings of the Test match, New Zealand scored 553 runs in 145.3 overs. It was their record Test innings total in England. Their previous record total was 551/9 decl at Lord’s in June 1973.

In the meantime, it was New Zealand’s second-highest Test innings total against England. Their record is 615/9 decl in 201 overs at Mount Maunganui in November 2019.

It was the new record for most Test match individual scores in England by a New Zealand batter. Devon Conway was the previous record holder in this list with 223 runs (200+23) at Lord’s in June 2021.

New Zealand scored 837 runs in the recent Nottingham Test (553+284). Talking about New Zealand’s largest Test match total outside the home (combined 1st innings and 2nd innings totals), it was their record largest Test match total. Their previous largest Test match total outside the home was 804 (305+454/8 decl.) against England at Leeds in 2015.


  • Jonny Bairstow recorded the second-highest fourth-innings individual score by English batter at home Test

English cricketer Jonny Bairstow’s match-winning 136 runs were the second-highest fourth-innings individual score for an England cricketer in a home Test. Mark Butcher is the record holder with 173 not out against Australia at Leeds in August 2001.

  • 2nd largest Test match total for a team in a losing cause

New Zealand’s 837 runs (553+284) in the recent Nottingham Test has now become the second-largest Test match total for a team in a losing cause. The record is England’s 861 runs (England 496 & 365/8 decl.) against Australia at Leeds in 1948.

  • 2nd largest Test match total in England

A total of 1675 runs were scored in this Nottingham Test (New Zealand 553 & 284; England 539 & 299/5). It was the second-highest Test match total in England. The record for the highest Test match total in England was 1723 between England vs Australia at Leeds in 1948 (England 496 & 365/8 decl; Australia 458 & 404/3). 

  • Highest successful fourth-innings chase in Test cricket at Trent Bridge, Nottingham

While England successfully chased down the fourth innings target of 299 runs, it was the highest successful chase in the fourth innings of a Test match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The previous such record was successfully chasing 284 runs (284/6) by England against New Zealand in June 2004.  

Meanwhile, it was also England’s third-highest successful chase in the fourth innings of a Test match at home and fifth-highest successful chase in the fourth innings of their overall Test match history.


  • Most sixes for England in a Test match

England hit 18 sixes in this Test match. It was their most sixes in a Test match. Their previous record of most sixes in a Test match was 16 against Australia at Birmingham in August 2005.

  • Most boundaries and highest boundary scores in a Test match

In the recently concluded Nottingham Test, a total of 249 boundaries were hit (225 fours and 24 sixes). It is the record number of boundaries in a Test match. The previous record was 242 boundaries (238 fours and 4 sixes) during the 2004 Sydney Test between Australia vs India.  

In the same Nottingham Test, the total boundary score was 1044 runs (225 fours and 24 sixes) as it was the first time when 1000+ runs were scored only from the boundaries in a Test match. The previous record was 976 runs (238 fours and 4 sixes) during the 2004 Sydney Test between Australia vs India.
