United Arab Emirates (UAE) ended their journey in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in a stunning way by beating Namibia. It was also the first win for the UAE in their Men’s T20 World Cup history.
UAE, who previously played only one ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2014, didn’t experience a T20 World Cup win before Thursday (20th October) night as they earlier lost all their five games in this competition's history.
UAE beat Namibia by 7 runs
On Thursday, UAE faced Namibia at Geelong in the final game of Group A of the First Round of the ongoing T20 World Cup. Though they were already eliminated from this tournament before the beginning of that game, it was a must-win match for favorite Namibia to qualify for the Super 12 stage of this competition.
After deciding to bat first, UAE scored 148/3 in 20 overs. In reply, Namibia were once deeply struggling on 69/7. Then the no.7 batter David Wiese and the no.9 batter Ruben Trumpelmann set up an inspiring 70-run partnership for the eighth wicket. While Wiese scored 55 runs off 36 balls (3 fours and 3 sixes), Trumpelmann remained not out on 25 runs in 24 balls.
Despite that remarkable fight back, Namibia only managed 141/8 in 20 overs as the UAE registered their first-ever win in T20 World Cup history with that seven runs victory.
David Wiese’s major T20 World Cup records during this game: Oldest non-Asian batter, scoring 50+ runs at no.7, highest 8th wicket partnership
David Wiese is the oldest non-Asian batter to score 50+ runs in an innings during ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. At the age of 37 years and 155 days, Wiese achieved this record with his 55-run knock. Previously, the 37 years and 128 days old Australian cricketer Michael Hussey was holding that record when he scored 54 not out against Pakistan at Colombo (RPS) during the World T20 2012.
Overall, Wiese is the seventh oldest batter to score 50+ runs in an innings during ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history.
However, Wiese is still the fifth oldest Namibian cricketer to score 50+ runs in a T20I innings, while Craig Williams holds all the top four records in this book.
David Wiese became the second batter to score 50+ runs in an innings at no.7 or lower batting position during ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. Australian cricketer Michael Hussey scored 60 not out at the no.7 batting position against Pakistan during the semi-final of the World T20 2010 at Gros Islet.
David Wiese and Ruben Trumpelmann had a 70-run partnership for the eighth wicket. It is the highest eighth-wicket partnership in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. The previous record was an unbeaten 57-run partnership for the eighth wicket between the English cricketers Moeen Ali and David Willey against Afghanistan in Delhi during the World T20 2016.
